The new secure site in the North West of Englandwill be at the heart of the nation’s security, using cutting-edge technology and technical ingenuity to identify and disrupt threats to the UK. The aim is for theplanned site, based in Manchester, to open in 2019 –bringing hundreds of new jobs to the area.
Jeremy Fleming, Director of GCHQ, said:
“I’m delighted we’re opening a new site in the City ofManchester. It will create hundreds of high calibrejobs for people who will have a vital role in keepingthis country safe. Our new facility will open up a hugenew pool of highly talented, tech savvy recruits vitalto our future success.”
The Manchester site will extend GCHQ’s network ofsites in the UK, which currently sees a headquartersin Cheltenham, and offices in Bude in Cornwall, andScarborough. Last year, the National Cyber SecurityCentre (NCSC), which is part of GCHQ, opened itsnew headquarters in Victoria near London.
Mr Fleming added:
“Manchester is a city full of innovation and talent. Itis also a city known for its tolerance and inclusivity,which last year was tragically attacked by someonewho had neither.
“In that difficult time, we at GCHQ drew strengthfrom the togetherness and resilience shown by all ofManchester’s communities. That’s how you tackleterrorism.”
GCHQ works alongside MI5 and the Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) to keep Britain safe. Its heritagegoes back to its beginnings in at Bletchley Park, wherecode breakers helped wartime intelligence efforts.
The ingenuity and problem-solving of its wartimefounders is still abundant today in how its people helpto counter online and real-world threats from nationstates, criminal groups, terrorists, and individuals.
Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “This announcement will create hundredsof jobs and represent a huge vote of confidence in thetalent pool of potential employees in and aroundManchester.
GCHQ perform a vital role helping tokeep the country safe and we look forward to welcoming them to the city in 2019.” GCHQ is already recruiting for a range of roles acrossits existing sites, and jobs at its new Manchester officewill be advertised later this year.
